Impact of Energy Drink Consumption on Kidney Function and Its Association with Helicobacter pylori Infection in Iraqi Youth
Abstract
This study examined the impact of energy drink consumption on kidney function among Iraqi youth. It found that heavy consumption, particularly more than seven cans per week, was associated with a significant increase in uric acid levels, while serum creatinine showed no significant change. Moderate and low consumption were linked to reduced urea and blood urea nitrogen levels. The study also suggests that energy drinks may aggravate gastric irritation in individuals with Helicobacter pylori infection because of their high caffeine, sugar, and acid content. Overall, the findings indicate potential renal and gastrointestinal risks and highlight the need for further long-term investigation.
